This is wrong! Just because you can't hear differences between mp3s and CD doesn't mean no one can. perhaps you don't know what to listen for, or you are deaf. On top of that, you are wrong about many audiophiles. When CD came out, they hated it because it sounded cold and shrill. That may have been more due to the cheap converters in the early players, but even most pros, apart from people like Roger Nichols and Nile Rodgers, hated digital.

Your lack of knowledge of the audiophile world is evident in this article. No one in the audiophile world considers B&O high end sound anyway. Expensive and cool looking, but not high end sound.

Even the most uninterested person can usually hear a major difference between a decent system and crappy MP3's, but for most it's just not something the average person has the time for. One of my best friends has a $15,000 bicycle, that's what he's into. Meanwhile my $400 bike gets me where I need to go, but it's his hobby. Of course a lot of people could care less, they could probably care less about a lot of things.

Interest in high end audio has ALWAYS been a fringe thing, and hard core audiophiles are no less maniacal as people who fly fish or show pure bred terriers, or whatever other thing one happens to be obsessed with.

In the end, no one's pointing a gun to your head to buy any of this stuff, so why are you sounding so smug about it? It's just like fine cars, watches, whatever. Either you dig it, can afford it and hopefully appreciate it for what it is (not a status symbol) or you don't. And if you don't, that's ok too. You don't need an expensive stereo system to enjoy music, all you need is an iPod. Just like you don't need a Porsche 911 to get back and forth to the 7-11. And yet, while their product appeals to .0001% of the population, Porsche continues to grow and sell every car they make. Just as it is with the world of high end audio.

So, for all the harumphing on your part, audiophiles and high end audio will be just fine.

This post is great. But you should have given a historical nod to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who brought the audiophile movement mainstream with "FM (No Static at All)."
